trump’s paris decision VS nicaragua’s
Donald Trump has been shaking things up to say the least. When it comes to environmental protection he's been making some interesting (shocking) decisions as President. Lately, Trump is considering removing the US from the ranks of 190+ countries that signed the Paris Climate Agreement in 2015. There has been some backlash to the rumors that the US will withdrawal from the agreement and many use Syria and Nicaragua as comparisons because they did not sign.
It's sad that these comparisons are used to show the bad company the US would be keeping if they withdrew because Nicaragua at least is very sustainable.
The reason Nicaragua didn't sign the Paris Agreement was because they thought it wasn't strict enough, especially on large wealthy countries who contribute to a majority of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. Nicaragua did not opt out because they weren't willing to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions but because they wanted all countries to be doing more on that count. On the other hand it seems like the US and the Trump administration would be opting out because of the economic burden of moving to more sustainable practices. About 50% of Nicaragua's electricity was generated by renewables in 2015 and by 2020 that number should be up to 90%. The US gets only 13% of their energy from renewables, but is the second biggest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions worldwide.
In my opinion leaving the Paris Agreement for the reasons the Trump administration is considering would be a mistake and could cause a chain reaction that could cripple the environment. Nicaragua didn't sign the Agreement for the right reasons and it is a shame that they are now being dragged down because of Trump's potential decisions.
